MY ROLE IN ESPORTS

UBC OVERWATCH

DIRECTOR

Between 2020-2021, I worked with the University of British Columbia Esports Association to host tournaments, social events, and online pickup games as the Director of Overwatch. I was previously an executive at UBC Overwatch for multiple years before moving up into the director position.

I had a ton of fun socializing and getting people involved in the community to build new relationships and teams centered around playing Overwatch and other games as a group, whether it be a tournament or just online playing casual matches together.

UBC PREMIER & NIGHTWATCH ANALYST

As an analyst for an Overwatch team, it is my job to record all information from scrimmages. I will take this information and put it into either a program used to analyze the data or into a spreadsheet for all team members to access.

Working as an analyst has aligned very well with my passions, as I often work in spreadsheets for design work. Overwatch analyst data management is incredibly similar in regards to analyzing statistics to locate problems.

Many of the main stats we look for are based on statistics that we believe are our weakest points. Statistics like team fight win percentage, ultimate efficiency, and first picks are a few examples.

For example, a stat that we look at often is "first death." If we go into a team fight with five out of six people, we are automatically at a disadvantage, this would be a fault that would need to be corrected immediately. Based on this stat alone, we can determine that either someone or the whole team is playing too aggressive before the team fight even begins.

OVERWATCH MICRO COACHING

By definition, micro coaching focuses on the little things. For my players, I set up 30-60 minute coaching sessions to discuss numerous different mechanics, mindsets, optimizations, and so forth.

These sessions are focused on one player as opposed to the entire team.

My sessions are typically formatted into sections, focusing on faults that the player is repeating. These repetitive faults can range from ultimate misusage, to poor positioning, etc.

Each session is different and requires plenty of prep time before starting
