Kindled Spirit is a game jam project built by the TA's at the Langara Centre for Entertainment Arts. The project takes place on an unknown greek island, where you play as a phoenix spreading its wings and flying around the island to lite braziers that act as checkpoints for the phoenix.

Designing the island

At the beginning of the project, our original plan was to have large amounts of small objects and foliage to make it feel incredibly fast while flying over the island. However, as we continued to test, we found ourselves playing more and more with comically large geometry that was fun to fly on top of and around. This discovery led to us modeling large structures such as the lighthouse, mountain, and the damaged Parthenon buildings.

Flying in and around these buildings was incredibly fun, so we built the game around reaching exploring to find the braziers, placing them in locations that required different skill sets. These ranged from very tight squeezes to glides that you had to make from above. Each brazier has numerous ways of reaching it, which allows for personalization from player to player.

Finally, the island's design was made in the shape of a phoenix, each section of the bird representing a different biome. The head of the phoenix has ancient ruins, the feathers were amount, and the tail was a lighthouse. This design allowed players to center themselves quickly no matter where they were and explore locations they hadn't previously been with ease.

Story Opening

The story was designed from the start to be minimal. We wanted our player's primary focus to be on the gameplay and art while playing.

Because of this, our opening shows a simple text intro explaining that the Greek philosopher Herodotus stole a phoenix from Egypt and brought it back to roam the islands of Greece. The Phoenix must lite all of the braziers across the island to be at peace.

This easily skippable text was designed to get the player into the action as fast as possible while understanding their goal.
